the worst case of graffiti coverage I'd ever seen
...fascinating, impressive architecture that shone out from its surroundings
The Olympic Stadium
Along the berm bank were small, floating platforms chained to the wall,
clearly intended for birds to build their nests on.
Some in tyres...
...we passed through the electrically-operated Old Ford Lock onto the Lea
...strange, plastic-looking craft, in various bright colours
Lee Valley Springfield Marina
Even some of the boats were dying, and decaying into the river.
But there were some splendid boats standing tall amongst the living...
...the locks were the most interesting feature of that day’s journey by far
Birds sat on nests, or busily put the finishing touches to a new build.
We chose to stop about half way between
the Waltham Cross and Cheshunt locks
...at the start of something more rural, and far more pleasing
We started the next day passing between lakes
...a solo rower drove at high speed into an overhanging tangle of tree branches
Feildes Weir Lock is the last on the Lee before the Stort Junction.
As soon as we turned onto the Stort, the character
of our surroundings changed considerably.
...dead, toppled, broken and piled in skeletal heaps
We stopped for the night right above Hunsdon Mill Lock
...a pile of wood burned slowly, the smokey incense carried gently on the
breeze, garden trees cut down because of disease, leaving huge spaces
where once they looked magnificent.
The river was very winding, and narrow, Oxford-like.
Sheering Mill Lock
...we moved on to Sawbridgeworth Lock, and tied up there
We climbed the final five locks before Stortford,
then winded, and moored in the very last space before the end of the navigable river.
...got back out into the countryside
Tednambury Lock
At Hunsdon Mill Lock... we decided to make it lunchtime
And then we're at the junction with the River Lea again,
and we turn right, north towards Hertford.
Stanstead Lock's an odd one.
...mooring at a lovely spot opposite some very tasteful modern housing
